The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 30 - December 6, 1946 Firing Up The New Furnace!



Saturday, November 30, 1946

Very cold. Bob and Billie hauled some shavings for pigs and barn. Billie worked up to Chet’s. Bill and I went to town and got pipes for furnace.



Sunday, December 1, 1946

Finish setting up the new furnace and started a fire. Fern and Lloyd came up in eve. Nice hot water.



Monday, December 2, 1946

Light snow last night. Cold and squalls forenoon. We washed and a terribly cold day. An awful windy day.



Tuesday, December 3, 1946

Still cold this morning, but no wind. Warmed up a little. I ironed.



Wednesday, December 4, 1946

Cleaned up the house. Much warmer. We cooked a little.



Thursday, December 5, 1946

Cloudy and cold. Bill bought oil. Mama down to Dot and Forrest’s. Fern and Lloyd called in eve. We had a yellow cat come to us.

November 23 - 29, 1946 Happy Hen Day



Saturday, November 23, 1946

Warren Chadbourne’s home burned flat about 4 o’clock this morning. Cold. Bill still homeworking in cellar. Billie up to Chet’s. Hiber (?) called also Dot and Aunt Mina called. Mama down to Ferns all night.



Sunday, November 24, 1946

Very cold. Lin Hill brought up our new furnace. Ken, Dolores, Kennie and Rayburn, Bob and Papa called. Bill lame today. Mama came home tonight.



Monday, November 25, 1946

We washed. Very warm. Ironed in eve. Fern and Lloyd up in eve. Lloyd and Bill began on the furnace. Sally in hospital.



Tuesday, November 26, 1946

Cloudy. We churned. I made some brownies. Bill worked on furnace in eve. Billie up to Chet’s in p.m. Billie and I killed our hen for Thanksgiving.



Wednesday, November 27, 1946

Nice cold day. We cooked. Billie worked up to Chet’s. Bill downtown after work to see Lin Hill and get Dorothea who is at Brownies meeting. Bob got a doe today on top of Mt. Pleasant.



Thursday, November 28, 1946

Bill (?Billie) worked on tie up. Bill worked on new furnace. Chicken, sweet potato, mashed potato, squash, onions, shell beans, gravy, hot rolls, cranberry sauce. Lemon sponge, custard, date filled pies, whip cream cake, Jell-O, tea, Indian pudding. Brownies and doughnuts. Coffee.



Friday, November 29, 1946

Bill back to work. Billie didn’t work today at Chet’s. He did a lot of work here. I washed. Carlton called. Bill worked on the new furnace in eve.

November 16 - 22, 1946

Nice day. Bill finished hauling shavings. He went to town in pm. Billie up to Chet’s. Lin Hall called up to see about furnace.



Sunday, November 17, 1946

Nice day. Mama down to Ferns. Kennie’s folks call. Kennard and Papa, Bob called. We bought 12 pullets and a rooster off Bob today. Bill down to see Les Thomes.



Monday, November 18, 1946

Nice day but very cold. Bill over to Jim’s after two weeks at home. I washed. Mama mended all day.



Tuesday, November 19, 1946

Down to Ferns today having one of Mama’s dresses made over for me. Nice day. Billie up to Chet’s. Auntie gave me a plant.



Wednesday, November 20, 1946

I cleaned the grain room. Warm and nice today. Bill bought a new furnace off Lin Hill. Bill and I went down to Lin Hills. Dorothea to Brownie meeting.



Thursday, November 21, 1946

Did regular work. Billie worked up to Chet. Bill over to Jim’s.



Friday, November 22, 1946

Rained hard in p.m. Bill didn’t work. Fired cement in cellar. Billie did Chet’s chores. Bill and I went up after him.

November 9 -15,1946 A Secret Wedding is Revealed!



Saturday, November 9, 1946

Cloudy. Milan and Bill cut some timber 5000 (?) feet tonight. Milan and I went to town in p.m. Betty up here for supper, dear steaks, beans. Billie up to Chet’s working.



Sunday, November 10, 1946

Cloudy. Billie up to Chet’s working. Bill drawed out rest of windows and put on storm windows. Mama and I washed them. Kennie and Raymond went hunting.



Monday, November 11, 1946

Rained very hard. No school. Lloyd and Bill hunted. We washed.



Tuesday, November 12, 1946

Cleared off a little. Bill and Milan worked in forenoon down in the woods. Dorothea and I went to PTA with Fern and the Lucks.



Wednesday, November 13, 1946

We started to clean the kitchen. Milan and Bill worked in the woods. Very nice day. Dorothea went to Brownies meeting for first time.



Thursday, November 14, 1946

Milan and Betty left tonight for Florida. They were here for dinner to tell us they were married last Monday night. She is a very good girl. I finished cleaning kitchen. Bill hauled shavings for shed.



Friday, November 15, 1946

I did a big wash and cleaned the shed. Bill down to Jean’s in eve.

November 2 - 8, 1946 Milan got his deer!

Rained hard all day. Bill and Milan hunted. Billie worked up to Chet’s. Bill and I went to town in late p.m.



Sunday, November 3, 1946

Still raining. Bill fixed up the cellar dugout, the barn, cellar drain. Billie hauled sawdust all day. I washed.



Monday, November 4, 1946

Clearing. Milan got his dear. 100 lbs. 8 oz. doe. Got her down by twin rocks. We cleaned 2 downstairs bedrooms. Kennard and Kennie folks came up to see the deer.

Tuesday, November 5, 1946

Finished up the bedrooms and began in the sitting room. Bill and Milan began in the woods. Awful cold out. Bob cut up the deer tonight.



Wednesday, November 6, 1946

Awful cold. Wind stopped blowing. Carlton called a few minutes. We churned and cooked a little.



Thursday, November 7, 1946

Finished the sitting room. Worked til late to do it. Milan and Bill still in the woods. I called Merton Kimball tonight.


Friday, December 8, 1946

Rained all day. I cleaned the dining room. Milan to town, Bill and Bob hunting. Jack came home from M. G. H.
