The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 22 - 26, 1956



Sunday, April 22, 1956

A fair day. Kind of cold. Bill and Billie helped Lloyd saw wood. Dorothea and Joy went to church today. Wyvern and family called. Kids are very cunning. In PM Dorothea and I went down to Jean’s, Ferns, Aunt Ava’s, Kennie’s and Dot’s and over to Aunt Linnies and Conant’s. She was dressed in her uniform. She looked very nice. In evening she went out with Dickie Smart. Kail here all day. Billie’s veal calf went today.



Monday, April 23, 1956

A Bum day. It SNOWED about 3 or 4 inches. I washed. Bill didn’t work. Billie gone all day. Dorothea and Judy over to Norway in a.m. In PM Judy and Barb were here. B made a dress for Dorothea. Pig went this p.m.



Tuesday, April 24, 1956

A fair day but on the cold side. Bill and Billie worked in the woods. Snow went. Dorothea and kids, Joy, Judy and Barb went to Portland. Dorothea’s suitcase came.



Wednesday, April 25, 1956

A nice day but cold. Bill and Billie finished up the cutting today. Barb and Dorothea here in p.m. I went down to B’s for supper. Raymond called.

Thursday, April 26, 1956

A rainy day. Billie, Dorothea and Donnie and I over to Lida’s in p.m. Bill back to work. Betty rollerskating tonight. D and Judy gone to movies.

April 18 - 21, 1956 Big Surprise!



Wednesday, April 18, 1956 A Big Surprise

I cleaned some bureau draws upstairs and in PM a big surprise. About 2 o’clock Dorothea drove in. She looks so nice all tanned and dressed in her uniform. We was so glad to see her. She went downtown in evening with Judy. Fern and Lloyd and Uncle Os called in eve.



Thursday, April 19, 1956

A nice day, little cold. Dorothea didn’t get up very early. I cleaned up the house and cooked. Billie downtown to get some groceries. Blanche over in p.m., was surprised to see D. D and Betty over to Blanches to fix some of D’s uniforms. Barbara and Janice called. In the evening the two Hannaford girls and Dickie Smart.



Friday, April 20, 1956

Betty and I cleaned out the shed chamber. Dorothea down to Barbra’s all day. Billie worked up to Chet’s today. Dolores up this a.m. A very nice day.



Saturday, April 21, 1956

A nice day. I did some cooking. Dorothea and I downtown in a.m. to Edith’s. In p.m. Dorothea went to Lewiston with Blanche to get Joy. Billie raked. Betty want to movies in p.m. Bill brought home his first paycheck today for eight weeks. Joy and Dorothea and a few others girls went to movies in evening. Joy over here to stay all night.

April 13 - 17, 1956



Friday, April 13, 1956

Finish painting and cleaned, varnished Mama’s room and rug, painted kitchen ceiling. Got paper for kitchen. A cold windy day, began to snow tonight. I cleaned up the living room and dining room. Lloyd called also Goden Oakley.



Saturday, April 14, 1956

Finished papering and painting the kitchen today. It looks very nice. Fern and Lloyd called in p.m. Raymond called also. Fair today.



Sunday, April 15, 1956

Kennie and Dot here today and for dinner. Kennie and Bill got some of the plumbing fixtures in for the shower, seat etc. I washed kitchen windows and ironed the curtains. Lloyd called, Robert, and Raymond. Mama moved back into her rooms today. It looks very nice. Cloudy and began to rain at about dark.



Monday, April 16, 1956

A cloudy dreary rainy day. I washed and took care of some mail, papers etc. Betty home for a week’s vacation.



Tuesday, April 17, 1956

A very nice day, little on the cold side. Snow went a lot even so. Ironed, cooked, did some work up in Betty’s room. Dolores called and Aunt Ava. Betty down to Aloha’s for the day, to movies in evening. Bill began working over to Jim Chadbourne’s after eight weeks to the day he got through for the town.

Monday, April 9, 1956

I washed. Kind of cloudy. Billie and I went to town in p.m. Uncle Os called. Raymond called. Jill and Kay and Holly here after school. Flecks called in eve. Bill busy.



Tuesday, April 10, 1956

I ironed, cooked, a very good day. Tonight was the junior high concert. I went with Fern, Uncle Os and Blanche, it was very good. Betty sang. Kay Fleck played in JHS band. Very pretty.



Wednesday, April 11, 1956

A very nice day. Snow has melted a lot today. Betty had Blondie out tonight. Billie and I got the paper for the new bathroom today. Aunt Ava, Uncle Lewis and Raymond call today. I have churned and cooked some. Bill painted today and (?) Meressrod Oilings and I cleaned up.

Put down the rug in new bathroom and new hallway. Papered new bathroom. It looks so nice. A very nice day. Snow went a lot.

A cloudy and rainy day. I cooked. Snow settled today. The bathroom outfit came tonight.



Thursday, April 5, 1956

A very nice day, snow settled a lot. Fern and Lloyd up in p.m. We got the bathroom fixtures set in. Robert over in eve also Hayd, Helen and Kay came in eve. Kennie here in p.m. Records of Dorothea’s came.



Friday, April 6, 1956

A very nice day. Saw first robin today for the season. To town today. Begun to tear out partition today for new bathroom. Charlie and Jean called today. Down town in a.m.



Saturday, April 7, 1956

A nice day. Robert came over. Dorothea’s pictures came today, very nice. Bill got quite a lot done in the new bathroom today. Ina Wildberger died today at a Lewiston hospital. She was a distant cousin of Mama’s. They were quite close.



Sunday, April 8, 1956

Cloudy, cold and snow squalls. Bill worked in the new toilet. Kennie, Dot, Fern, Lloyd called. I wrote my letters.
