The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 8 - 13, 1955



Saturday, January 8, 1955

It was quite cold. Did up the housework. Susan has cold. Bill and I went to town. Es and Cliff took Susan over to the doctors.



Sunday, January 9, 1955

Very cold. Did up the work. Went to town in a.m. Es and Cliff took Susan over to see Dr. Newth for a cold. They also went to town. Aunt Ava called in p.m.



Monday, January 10, 1955

Cold in forenoon but a very nice day. Lloyd, Cliff, Bill and Betty went ice fishing, got a nice string of pickerel. Kennie,Dot, Rayburn, Joan and Karen, Bob, Blanche and Joy and Kennard also Sarah and Doc called for a little while in the evening.




Tuesday, January 11, 1955

Nice day. We did a big wash. Very late getting it done. Es and I went to town in afternoon. Billie worked.



Wednesday, January 12, 1955

Got the clothes in, done some ironing. Es, Mama, Cliff, and Susan went up to Buckfield for the afternoon. Very nice day. Billie worked.



Thursday, January 13, 1955

Very nice day. Cold. Called over to Aunt Linnie’s in afternoon. Cliff, Susan and Es went down to Lib Jacobs Anderson’s and called. Finished the ironing. Fern got her teeth. First set. Billie still working.

Success In The Diary

On the inside cover of Nanny's 1955 Diary she has written success and successful. I'm not sure what she was writing this for, but she sure is successful in making us laugh. Miss you Nanny!

January 1 - 7, 1955







 Saturday, January 1, 1955

Went down to Fern’s, she shortened my new coat. Fair day. Bill, Lloyd and Billie cut and wrapped meat.



Sunday, January 2, 1955

Snowed. Bill had to work all p.m. til into evening. Raymond called in the evening.



Monday, January 3, 1955

We washed, nice day. Billie and I went to town, he got a new work jacket and other clothes. He sold a Guernsey cow and a veal calf to Lawrence Boynton. He and I went over to Jim Chadbourne’s and Dr. Newths also.


Tuesday, January 4, 1955

Fair most of day. Billie worked. Delores called. I ironed. Es, Cliff and Susan started for Maine today.




Wednesday, January 5, 1955

Cleaned the kitchen up. Nice day. Betty gone to movies with Blanche.



Thursday, January 6, 1955

Did up the work. Billie worked at Lawrence’s. Washed clothes.



Friday, January 7, 1955

I washed floors and windows, also waxed them. Very cold and windy and blustery. Es, Cliff and Susan came today.

Cloudy and very foggy. Betty went up to Blanche for the day. She gave her a toni. Evelyn called in p.m. I didn’t get my ironing done.



Wednesday, December 29, 1954

Fair. Quite warm. I ironed. Mama down to Ferns for the day.



Thursday, December 30, 1954

Bill’s birthday 46. Got letter from Es. She is sick in bed.



Friday, December 31, 1954

Done up the housework in p.m. Went to Portland with Evelyn and got my new coat.

December 23 - 27, 1954 Christmas Time

I went down and got a permanent this forenoon, a Christmas present from Billie. I cooked in p.m. In evening went down to the Christmas party at the church with Betty. She was singing with her class in it.



Friday, December 24, 1954

Bill didn’t have to work. He and I went to town in a.m. I cooked and cleaned up the house. Billie brought home Betty’s sheep. Bob’s folks called. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called to see the tree. Late in eve. Fern, Lloyd and Uncle Os came and we called the Deming family and Dorothea. It was so good to talk to them. Church S. S. went singing carols in evening.

Saturday, December 25, 1954 Christmas Day

Very nice day. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis here for dinner. We all had a lot of nice gifts. In eve, Kennie, Dot, Bob and family here for supper and evening. Had a good time. Chicken, turkey, gravies, mashed potato, onion, turnip, shell beans, two kinds salad, pickle, rolls, graham nut bread, custard, date filled, and apple pie, chiffon, chocolate cake, jellyroll, ice cream, suet pudding and coffee.



Sunday, December 26, 1954

Fair. Kind of cold. Took out the Christmas tree, and got the house back into shape.





Monday, December 27, 1954

Kennard and Delores came home after spending Christmas at Brud, Verna and Nola Raye’s. Fair, washed.
