The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 7 - 13, 1946



Saturday, September 7, 1946

Nice day. We churned. I went to town with Bill. Mama bought a new dishpan.

Sunday, September 8, 1946

Cloudy. Bill covered S. plants with cow dressing. Bob hauled manure. Bill and Val put up new fence. And Billie bought his new cow from Chet $150.



Monday, September 9, 1946

Sent for my pressure cooker. Milan bought it for me. School began today. Billie to high school freshman Dorothea to 4th grade at grammar school.



Tuesday, September 10, 1946

Cloudy. School bus didn’t call for kids. Showers. Up to Minnie’s a few minutes. Milan and Bill worked part of the day.



Wednesday, September 11, 1946

Nice day. I ironed. Billie didn’t go to school. Dorothea and kids went on the North Bridgton bus. Nice and warm.



Thursday, September 12, 1946

Nice day, we washed. Billie and I and Dorothea pulled the beans out of the (?) corn. Dolores and Kennard called in eve.



Friday, September 13, 1946

Blanche, Joy, Betty and I went to Portland. Joy had her eyes tested. Betty’s first trip had a good time. Found our small pig dead. Also a bad frost. Mama canned 10 quarts shell beans.
