The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 27 - May 3, 1946 Car Fell on Bill



Saturday, April 27, 1946

Cold and cloudy. Billie hauled some manure. He went to town in PM. It rained awful hard in p.m. Bill home early, they went to Harrison, got grain and groceries.



Sunday, April 28, 1946

Bill still working on car. He got hurt, the car fell onto his chest. Mama, Bill, kids and I went up to East Stoneham. Cold.



Monday, April 29, 1946

We washed. Cold and windy. Bill didn’t work. Awful lame from the car that fell on him. Bill went to Dr. Mr. Murray came.



Tuesday, April 30, 1946

Sent for curtains, rug for dining room. Bill painted dining room. I went down to Ferns in p.m. and we cleaned house. Billie took his heifer up to Chets.



Wednesday, May 1, 1946

Bill still home with lame neck and shoulder. He painted the dining room floor. I went down to Ferns to clean.



Thursday, May 2, 1946

Cold today and windy. I went down to Ferns today and cleaned. Bill still home.



Friday, May 3, 1946

Bill made cement doorsteps today. Very cold. I went down to Ferns.
