The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 25 - 31, 1946



Saturday, May 25, 1946

Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis went fishing. Washed. Mama picked over strawberry plants. Joy up here all day. Nice day.



Sunday, May 26, 1946

Rained all day. Bill set out strawberry plants Mama and I picked them over. Uncle Lewis painted sitting room floor. Aunt Ava and Dorothea did the work.



Monday, May 27, 1946

Rained. We settled sitting room. Worked in the dining room.



Tuesday, May 28, 1946

Still raining. Bill painted hall floor, laid rug in the hallway upstairs. We finished dining room. Billie up to Hayd to haul dressing in eve.



Wednesday, May 29, 1946

We washed. Started to clean the shed. Fern and Auntie called in eve. Billie up to Hayd’s in eve to haul dressing. Delores and Kennard called.



Thursday, May 30, 1946

Nice hot day. Bill worked at Jim’s. Kennie and Billie got ground ready up to Papa’s to plant. Bruce ran away with the cart. Got (?). Bill and Billie planted one (?) of yellow corn and yellow eye beans. We sat out dahlias in eve.



Friday, May 31, 1946

Papa down in a.m. Set out glads. Cleaned out small chicken pen for a playroom. Papa not very well.
