The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 10 - 16, 1946



Saturday, August 10, 1946

Showers. Cleaned up the house. Mama canned beets. Bill and Billie home early p.m. Our sitting room curtains came. Our bull over to Raymonds.



Sunday, August 11, 1946

We canned peaches, 21 quarts. Nice day. I went down to mill with Bill and Billie to get sawdust. Visited with Grovers. Brud on his way home.



Monday, August 12, 1946

We washed. Nice day and I went to Portland with Owen and Helen in p.m.



Tuesday, August 13, 1946

Nice day. Dorothea and I down to Ferns and picked string beans and blackberries. We picked 2 bushels beans. We ironed. Blanche and kids called.



Wednesday, August 14, 1946

It rained. Bill, Billie and Milan home. Mom and I canned blackberries and string beans and corn.  51 jars altogether. Milan fired gun at Valley VJ Day anniversary.



Thursday, August 15, 1946

Nice day. Dorothea and I down to Ferns all day. I helped Fern to clean up the house.



Friday, August 16, 1946

Bill and I went to the movies in eve. We washed today. Cloudy in eve.
