The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, October 19, 1946

Did regular work. Went to town in eve. Bob, Bill and Billie and Raymond went coon hunting.



Sunday, October 20, 1946

Nice day. Cold. Washed and ironed. Billie moved the hog over, did a lot of other work. Bill done a little shingling.



Monday, October 21, 1946

Washed, ironed. Nice day. Mama and Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis came tonight here for supper and stayed all night. They went coon hunting.



Tuesday, October 22, 1946

Nice day, warmer. Mama, Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis went up to Oz Abbots to stay tonight. Had some hamburger tonight 1 pound for $.59. Good.



Wednesday, October 23, 1946

Schools closed at noon. Teacher convention Thursday and Friday. I had a good baked beans tonight. Very warm. Coon hunting tonight. Sara up in p.m.



Thursday, October 24, 1946

No school. Billie up to Chet’s working all day. Aunt Ava and Mama and Uncle Lewis came home tonight. Coon hunting again tonight.



Friday, October 25, 1946

Billie still up to Chet’s. Kind of cloudy. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis down town calling. Dorothea down to Sara’s all day.
