The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 14 - 20, 1946



Saturday, September 14, 1946

Billie worked. Bill worked. Milan didn’t get home til late. Joy here last night and all day today. We canned corn. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis here on way home to Yarmouth.



Sunday, September 15, 1946

Billie worked at Chets. Nice day. Bill pulled some beans. Stoned up under the barn.



Monday, September 16, 1946

I washed, churned. Very busy all day. Nice day. They all worked. Churned 5 ¾ lbs. butter.



Tuesday, September 17, 1946

Very hot. Billie up to Chet’s in p.m. I canned mincemeat. Delores and Brud called, Jack and Sylvia called. We paid Jean for flowers.



Wednesday, September 18, 1946

I sent for tricycle for Betty’s Christmas with Milan’s board money. Nice and hot again today. I ironed.

Betty at 3 1/2 years old.



Thursday, September 19, 1946

Betty and I went up to Minnie’s in AM. A very nice day. Cleaned up the house.



Friday, September 20, 1946

Another wonderful day. I washed. Billie’s class at school had to wear baby clothes and take a bottle to school. Had a good time.
