The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, August 17, 1946

Cleaned up the house. Mama canned carrots and squash. George Allen called.



Sunday, August 18, 1946

Nice day. Bill worked for Lloyd. Billie up to Chet’s. I picked some beans and berries at Ferns. Dorothea down there and spent the day. Fern and Lloyd up in eve.



Monday, August 19, 1946

We washed. I cleaned up the shed. We worked all day. Lawrence Whiting died. Es left Ohio for home this morning.



Tuesday, August 20, 1946

Ironed, cleaned up the house, churned and looking for Esther tonight but didn’t come. Milan standing guard over Whiting’s body, also Francis (?).



Wednesday, August 21, 1946


Cleaned up the house, mowed grass. Esther, Grace and Mrs. Ludlow came about 5 o’clock p.m. Es looked good. Milan standing guard tonight.


Thursday, August 22, 1946


Very nice day. Went down over powerline berrying with Smart kids. Esther, Grace and Mrs. L called in p.m. Bad showers.

Friday, August 23, 1946



Esther came up this p.m. and stayed all night. The family all came up in the eve to see her. Also Verna and Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis came. Many bad showers at night lots of places struck.
