The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 28 - October 4, 1946 Roger's Brook Bridge Washes Out



Saturday, September 28, 1946

A very nice day. Rayburn here. He and Billie picked some corn. Dorothea went to the fair with Bob’s folks. Milan and I went to town in eve.



Sunday, September 29, 1946

We pulled our beans. Picked and husked corn. Nice warm sunny day. Dug Robert’s cellar hole today.



Monday, September 30, 1946

Very bad rainy day. Showers. Roger’s brook bridge washed out. Blocked up the road. Bill and Milan didn’t work. Billie began to ride on high school bus.



Tuesday, October 1, 1946

Still raining. Bill or Milan didn’t work. Very cold day. Bill and I stacked the beans. Milan over to Fryeburg Fair working. We washed.



Wednesday, October 2, 1946

Cloudy and cold. We ironed. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis and Hulda (?) came and got Mama to go down to Yarmouth.



Thursday, October 3, 1946

Clear and cold. Cleaned up the house.



Friday, October 4, 1946

Nice day. Billie went to the fair with Chet and Lil. I washed.
