The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 15 - 18, 1956

Thursday, March 15, 1956

A very nice day but a lot of snow. Billie worked up to Chets. Bill didn’t work because of snow in woods. Raymond and Dennis went to Portland for Raymond to have his eyes tested. Terrie here after school with Betty. Bill and Evelyn Ridlon called in evening. Betty did the dishes after supper alone.

Friday, March 16, 1956 Blizzard

Nice and sunny in early morning but clouded up in middle forenoon. Bobby helped Bill in woods. Billie helped Dennis shovel snow from roofs up to Redfields. A very big blizzard came this p.m. and tonight. Aloha Bradley here all night.

Saturday, March 17, 1956

Cloudy in a.m., cleared in p.m. We are snowed in again this morning, not quite as bad as February 17, 1952. Bill and Billie shoveled all day here, over to Raymond and at Aunt Ava’s. Kennard down in p.m. Bill and I went to town. Aloha went home in p.m.

Sunday, March 18, 1956

A very nice sunny day. Bill, Billie, Lloyd and Robert down to the cottages and shoveled off roofs. Betty rode Blondie. I took some snaps of the snow. Kennard and Dolores called in a.m. I churned. Kennard and Bill made another chain tire for Kennard’s car. Also took some snaps of Blondie,Donnie and Betty.

Love the double exposure - turn sideways to see Billie's car and barn.
