The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Wednesday, April 18, 1956 A Big Surprise

I cleaned some bureau draws upstairs and in PM a big surprise. About 2 o’clock Dorothea drove in. She looks so nice all tanned and dressed in her uniform. We was so glad to see her. She went downtown in evening with Judy. Fern and Lloyd and Uncle Os called in eve.



Thursday, April 19, 1956

A nice day, little cold. Dorothea didn’t get up very early. I cleaned up the house and cooked. Billie downtown to get some groceries. Blanche over in p.m., was surprised to see D. D and Betty over to Blanches to fix some of D’s uniforms. Barbara and Janice called. In the evening the two Hannaford girls and Dickie Smart.



Friday, April 20, 1956

Betty and I cleaned out the shed chamber. Dorothea down to Barbra’s all day. Billie worked up to Chet’s today. Dolores up this a.m. A very nice day.



Saturday, April 21, 1956

A nice day. I did some cooking. Dorothea and I downtown in a.m. to Edith’s. In p.m. Dorothea went to Lewiston with Blanche to get Joy. Billie raked. Betty want to movies in p.m. Bill brought home his first paycheck today for eight weeks. Joy and Dorothea and a few others girls went to movies in evening. Joy over here to stay all night.
