The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Wednesday, February 8, 1956

Very nice day. I ironed. Barbara and mother called in p.m. Kevin Foster up here in p.m. with a Chevrolet car to see Billie.



Thursday, February 9, 1956

A very nice day. In evening we had Fern and family up for supper and evening for a farewell for Dorothea. Billie tried out a 1950 Ford today. Back over to Raymond’s to log. Billie sold Holstein cow tonight Elmer Fogg.



Friday, February 10, 1956

Dorothea, Judy, Edith McAllister and I all went to Norway to shop and kids get their checks. Dorothea went to the game with David (?) Waisaman. Betty to school dance. Billie home all evening.



Saturday, February 11, 1956

Fair. I cleaned up the kitchen, went to town with Dorothea for last time for about three years, came home and cooked. Cloudy in p.m. Dorothea done some packing. Betty down to Kay Flecks and the movies in eve. Dorothea got her income tax fixed up today at Marian Dews. Billie home all eve. Cut more timber today.





Sunday, February 12, 1956

Bill up and out plowing snow at 3 AM. Billie tried out a Plymouth car this morning. I rode around with him. Kay Fleck up here with Betty. Dorothea and I went down to Ada Reynolds for going away party for Judy McAllister. Billie bought a 1952 Plymouth today from Cumberland Motors. Tonight he is sick with worry.
