The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 10 - 14, 1956



Saturday, March 10, 1956

Nice day. I cooked, cleaned up the house. Bill and I went down to Pete and Edith’s in evening. Bill and Billie worked in woods all day. They are hauling logs from woods.



Sunday, March 11, 1956

Cloudy. Bill and Billie worked in woods in forenoon. Kennie and Dot here in p.m. I wrote to Es and Dorothea. Got check for logs. They hauled some today.


Monday, March 12, 1956

I washed. Billie and Bill worked over in woods in a.m. In p.m. Billie worked for Dennis cutting pulp wood down to South Bridgton. They hauled the logs off today and they hauled more from the woods. Mama down to Ferns today. She bought Fern an Airway vacuum cleaner like mine.



Tuesday, March 13, 1956

I did some cooking and ironing. They have hauled up rest of logs from the woods. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called in p.m. Kay Fleck here after school. Joan and Jim Emerson here in evening. Raymond called this a.m., he didn’t look very good.



Wednesday, March 14, 1956

Another storm today. About six or eight inches. Martikaiken here to survey logs. Bill over to Norway today. Billie got his haircut. I churned 2 pounds butter today.
