The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 24 - 31, 1954



Wednesday, March 24, 1954

Very nice day. Cooked a little. Donnie’s mother and grandma came up. They took Donnie out for a ride over to ski tow. Brought him up some clothes. My check came today. Fern, Uncle Os, Lloyd and George Laford called. George played his accordion. Billie up to North Waterford to lodge with Bill Harmon and Dennis. Billie, Dennis hauled hay today.



Thursday, March 25, 1954

Cloudy today. Billie and Dennis hauled hay. It snowed about 3 or 4 inches. Bill got stuck coming home. Was two hours getting home. Had to go right back. Worked till midnight. Billie and I dressed the hens we bought off Dennis. Billie went to see about the tractor at Claude Monks.



Friday, March 26, 1954

Cleared off nice, but awful windy. Did regular work. Bill over to the doctors. Mama rode over with him. Billie down to take his driver’s test. Didn’t pass eye test, got to go two weeks from today.



Saturday, March 27, 1954

Nice day. I went to town in p.m. Linda Weeman up here all day. Brud and Verna came down for over the weekend. Brud traded cars. Mama, Bill, Betty and I went down to Kennie’s and Dot’s and watched theirs. It was a nice evening, very good programs.



Sunday, March 28, 1954

Brud, Verna and Nola Raye called here this forenoon. Kind of windy and cold. Billie up to Chet’s in p.m. Fern and Lloyd came up in p.m. A cold gray day.



Monday, March 29, 1954

We washed. Bill and I over to the doctor’s in eve. Called at Ferns on way home.



Tuesday, March 30, 1954

I ironed. Mama mended. About five or six inches of snow came. Mama went down to Fern’s in p.m.



Wednesday, March 31, 1954

I cooked. Evelyn R. called.
