The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 18 - 23, 1954



Thursday, February 18, 1954

Nice and warm. I went over to Aunt Ava’s today. Had a good time and dinner. Donnie still sick. Billie shoveled snow.



Friday, February 19, 1954

Another nice day. Donnie very sick, I had Dr. Mabry for him. It is his nerves.



Saturday, February 20, 1954

Another nice day. Bill and Billie downtown in p.m. Joan and Jim Emerson called for a little while. Donnie much out of control. Mama didn’t feel very good. Brud, Verna and Nola Raye came down. They called on us, she is cute. Betty had to go to school this forenoon to make up for her Friday the 12th. Robert called and invited us up to see TV. Mama, Betty, Billie and I went. Bill stayed with Donnie. Bill quite lame tonight.




Sunday, February 21, 1954

Cloudy all day. Donnie didn’t sleep much last night or any of us. He slept this morning till very late, no better though. I called his mother and father tonight. Billie up to Chet’s to dinner this p.m. Raymond called for a minute. Fern and Lloyd up tonight. Mama sick.



Monday, February 22, 1954

Cleared off. Donnie is better. It’s a big relief. His father and mother came up to see him. Mama a little better. Bill sent for his license. Billie went to the lodge tonight. Didn’t wash.



Tuesday, February 23, 1954

Very nice day. I washed. Billie and Dennis hauled 2 loads of hay. Betty rode horse back.
