The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 27 - November 2, 1954 Cale/Kail All The Same



Wednesday, October 27, 1954

Rain most all day. Cleared off late in p.m. I cleaned the kitchen today. Cale Fleck came up here tonight with Betty.



Thursday, October 28, 1954

Very nice day. Betty and Kail quiet and good today. I churned. Billie got a calf tonight for Gertie. Mama and I went to Lorraine’s wedding. We had a nice time. I very nice wedding. Married Alphonso Harmon.



Friday, October 29, 1954

Cloudy and rained. Kids not so quiet today. I cooked, I washed. Fern and Lloyd and Uncle Os up tonight.



Saturday, October 30, 1954

Cale went home this morning. I cleaned up the house. Bill and I went to town in p.m. Mama caught a bird. Fern and Lloyd up tonight.



Sunday, October 31, 1954

Fair. Mama up to Kennard’s. We killed rest of the hens.



Monday, November 1, 1954

Fern had her teeth out today. Rained. Churned.



Tuesday, November 2, 1954

Went down to Fern’s today and washed. Susan had her tonsils out today.
