The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 8 - 13, 1955



Saturday, January 8, 1955

It was quite cold. Did up the housework. Susan has cold. Bill and I went to town. Es and Cliff took Susan over to the doctors.



Sunday, January 9, 1955

Very cold. Did up the work. Went to town in a.m. Es and Cliff took Susan over to see Dr. Newth for a cold. They also went to town. Aunt Ava called in p.m.



Monday, January 10, 1955

Cold in forenoon but a very nice day. Lloyd, Cliff, Bill and Betty went ice fishing, got a nice string of pickerel. Kennie,Dot, Rayburn, Joan and Karen, Bob, Blanche and Joy and Kennard also Sarah and Doc called for a little while in the evening.




Tuesday, January 11, 1955

Nice day. We did a big wash. Very late getting it done. Es and I went to town in afternoon. Billie worked.



Wednesday, January 12, 1955

Got the clothes in, done some ironing. Es, Mama, Cliff, and Susan went up to Buckfield for the afternoon. Very nice day. Billie worked.



Thursday, January 13, 1955

Very nice day. Cold. Called over to Aunt Linnie’s in afternoon. Cliff, Susan and Es went down to Lib Jacobs Anderson’s and called. Finished the ironing. Fern got her teeth. First set. Billie still working.
