The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 20 - 26, 1954 Thanksgiving



Saturday, November 20, 1954

Worked all day. Milan hunted the little. They got here about two this morning. Got Donnie’s haircut. Betty and I went to town in evening, got the Christmas club check.



Sunday, November 21, 1954

Rain. Milan’s folks went back today. Left about 1 PM. Kennard, Fern, Lloyd, Robert, Ronald, and girlfriend, Kennie, Ritter and wife all called. Shower, cleared it off. Betty and Norma Gay went to Sunday school and church.



Monday, November 22, 1954

Very nice day. Washed, got it done early. Cleaned up the house, did some cooking. Lloyd up, Fern’s ankles, wrist and knees swollen. Bill, Betty and I down there. Billie worked for Lawrence.



Tuesday, November 23, 1954

Very nice day till late p.m. I went up hung out Lil’s clothes. Churned and ironed. Billie worked again today.



Wednesday, November 24, 1954

Cooked, done up the housework. Nice day. Got cloudy in late p.m. Snowed during night.



Thursday, November 25, 1954 Thanksgiving Day

Got dinner, wash dishes is all for this day. Kennard, Fern and Lloyd here for dinner. We had for dinner, chicken, turkey and roast pork, potatoes, cranberry sauce, Jell-O fruit salad, celery, pickles, onions, turnip, shell beans, hot rolls, blueberry pie, apple pie, raspberry pie, butter crunch pie, whip cream cake, tarts, chocolate cake, coffee, grapes, mixed nuts and candy. Snow on the ground.



Friday, November 26, 1954

Did housework, washed. Kail came up this morning.
