The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 2 - 8, 1946 Milan got his deer!



Saturday, November 2, 1946

Rained hard all day. Bill and Milan hunted. Billie worked up to Chet’s. Bill and I went to town in late p.m.



Sunday, November 3, 1946

Still raining. Bill fixed up the cellar dugout, the barn, cellar drain. Billie hauled sawdust all day. I washed.



Monday, November 4, 1946

Clearing. Milan got his dear. 100 lbs. 8 oz. doe. Got her down by twin rocks. We cleaned 2 downstairs bedrooms. Kennard and Kennie folks came up to see the deer.

Tuesday, November 5, 1946

Finished up the bedrooms and began in the sitting room. Bill and Milan began in the woods. Awful cold out. Bob cut up the deer tonight.



Wednesday, November 6, 1946

Awful cold. Wind stopped blowing. Carlton called a few minutes. We churned and cooked a little.



Thursday, November 7, 1946

Finished the sitting room. Worked til late to do it. Milan and Bill still in the woods. I called Merton Kimball tonight.


Friday, December 8, 1946

Rained all day. I cleaned the dining room. Milan to town, Bill and Bob hunting. Jack came home from M. G. H.
