The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 28, 1946 - January 3, 1947



Saturday, December 28, 1946

Very bad snowstorm. Bill didn’t work. Got word about 8 o’clock this morning Uncle Willis died about 12:30 Saturday morning.



Sunday, December 29, 1946

Still snowing about 18 inches now. Bill and Billie shoveled roads. Kennard called. Dorothea still down to Joy’s.



Monday, December 30, 1946

Nice day. Bill 38 years. He and Billie hauled slabs from Les Thomes’ mill. We washed. Mama went to Uncle Willis’s funeral with Uncle Os’s folks. Lloyd gave me my new toaster today for my birthday. Joy up here today and tonight. Dorothea came home today.



Tuesday, December 31, 1946

Fair, still cold. Billie worked for Bob Smith hauling lumber up to (?). Joy still here today.




Wednesday, January 1, 1947

Still cold. Bill worked up to Herbert Allen’s hauling out wood. Kennard called in p.m. Joy went home tonight.



Thursday, January 2, 1947

Bad day. Snowed all day. Rained in late p.m. and all night. Bill not working.



Friday, January 3, 1947

Very bad rain, warmer, began to snow tonight again. Bill not working. Jean called up. Don’t think folks can come till spring.
