The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 14 -20, 1946



Saturday, December 14, 1946

Didn’t do much. Cooked. Rayburn up all day, he and Billie hunted. Kennie called up and got Ray in eve. Fire up to Sweden.



Sunday, December 15, 1946

Cold. Bill helped Lloyd in a.m. He and Billie fixed car and tires in p.m. Bob and Joy called.



Monday, December 16, 1946

Very nice day. Cold. Mama, Betty and I went to town with Dot and Aunt Mina and called at their house. Mama stayed for supper. Kimball boys got our pig and Bobs.



Tuesday, December 17, 1946

Rained and sleet today. Sent Christmas cards. Bob and Joy up in eve. Val down in eve. Mert Kimball didn’t bring pigs back, too slippery.



Wednesday, December 18, 1946

Cold today. Papa called. Kimball brought our pig back. Bob up and they cut up the pigs.



Thursday, December 19, 1946

Nice clear day. Mama and I cut up lard and sausage meat. Billie didn’t go to school.



Friday, December 20, 1946

Cloudy and cold. I cleaned up the house. School closed for Christmas. Billie up to Chet’s in eve. It is snowing. Fruit came from Es, Cliff, Milan and Betty.
