The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 21 - 27,1946 Merry Christmas!



Saturday, December 21, 1946

Had some very good beans tonight. Snow here this morning. Rained in p.m. Bill didn’t work, he and I went Christmas shopping etc.



Sunday, December 22, 1946

Billie bought two nice heifers off Chet. He and Bob went up and got them. Nice day but cold.

Monday, December 23, 1946

We washed. Got the clothes in. I ironed at night. Mama cooked in p.m. Bill worked today.



Tuesday, December 24, 1946

We churned, cooked, made corn balls. Sent a box up to Papa. Bill didn’t work. Rained. Made corn balls in p.m.



Wednesday, December 25, 1946

Christmas day. Everybody got a nice lot of presents. (Dinner). Chicken, pork, 2 kinds potato, peas, shell beans, onions, pies, suet pudding, whip cream, ice cream, cake etc.



Thursday, December 26, 1946

Terrible cold and windy. Sun shown. Carlton and Joe (?) called in p.m. Bill didn’t work. Bill and I up to Hayd’s in eve. Very cold and windy.



Friday, December 27, 1946

Still cold. Billie up to Chet’s in p.m. Bill fixed two trees. Mama sewed and mended all day. Dorothea went down to Joy’s.
