The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 29 - October 5, 1945



Saturday, September 29, 1945

I washed and ironed the kitchen and dining room curtains. Bill and Billie sawed wood and filled the shed.



Sunday, September 30, 1945

We worked all day. Bill and Billie sawed wood. Dolores called in p.m. Carlton and Kennard called. Fern and Lloyd up in eve. Mama home from Willis’s.



Monday, October 1, 1945

Cloudy. Billie here to help Bill. Mr. Murray came and got some more chickens.




Tuesday, October 2, 1945

Rained all day. I called on Minnie a few minutes. Carlton came up to go hunting. Kinnie and children called a little while.



Wednesday, October 3, 1945

Very cold and windy. I cleaned up the house. Bill worked in the henhouse. Bill’s arm very lame in the night.



Thursday, October 4, 1945

Nice day. Billie, Dorothea went to Fryeburg Fair with Carlton, Dolores, Dot and children. Bill sick with his arm.



Friday, October 5, 1945

Es and Cliff came today. Bill still sick. Billie and I moved the chickens into the henhouse. Es, Cliff and Fern called in eve. Ray up.
