The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 19 - 25, 1946



Saturday, January 19, 1946

Very cold and windy. Bill didn’t work. Fixed the pump. Milan went to Raymond Harmon’s wedding at Auburn was best man. Jack & Goden called in eve. Mama came home from Ferns.



Sunday, January 20, 1946

Very cold. Joy came here all day. Kennie and Rayburn called. Milan, Bill and Billie hauled some wood from Les Thomes.



Monday, January 21, 1946

We washed. Snowed. Bill didn’t work.



Tuesday, January 22, 1946

Bill didn’t work. Nice day. Mr. Murray came took some roosters. Paid $100. Began to haul Raymond’s timber. Put in the oil burners, Kennard and Bill tonight. Bill didn’t work - got the hams. Milan went to Portland.



Wednesday, January 23, 1946

Nice day. Bill back to work. Dorothea home sick. Ordered 5 bushels potatoes from Les Thomes.



Thursday, January 24, 1946

Billie over to Fryeburg with Jim Chadbourne to farm bureau meeting all day. Got 57 gallons fuel oil from (?) today.



Friday, January 25, 1946

Big blizzard, 14 inches of snow. No school and Bill didn’t work. Shoveled snow. Milan stayed down to Bob’s.
