The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 24 - 30, 1945



Saturday, November 24, 1945

Nice day. Rayburn came up this way hunting. Finished up the tie up. Mama came home from Ferns. Dorothea got her hood fixed. 


Sunday, November 25, 1945

Nice day. Cold. Dolores, Verna, and Kennard called also Kennie, Dot, and Lorraine. Mr. Murray got roosters tonight.



Monday, November 26, 1945

Mr. Murray sold to Mr. Lait 435 pullets. Mr. Murray took 86 chicks from barn. Very nice day but cold. Washed.



Tuesday, November 27, 1945

I ironed. Nice day. We wrapped Es and Cliff’s presents. I sent Dorothea’s dress back.



Wednesday, November 28, 1945

Moved chicken coops, Bill and I. Cloudy and snowed a little tonight. Fern went to Portland and had x-rays taken. We sent Es and Cliff’s  Xmas packages.



Thursday, November 29, 1945

Cold and cloudy began to snow and bad wind started. Bill went hunting. Bob calls. Got telegram from Milan.



Friday, November 30, 1945

A terrible blizzard and awful cold. Dorothea didn’t get to school. Milan came tonight.
