The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 1 - 5, 1955



Saturday, October 1, 1955

A very nice day. Kay Fleck here all day, also Rodney Durfee and Susan Palmer. They rode all day and was very tired, also poor old Blondie. Kail and Helen called for Kay in evening. Went to town in a.m., got another letter from Dorothea.



Sunday, October 2, 1955

Very nice day. Billie sold his whiteheads today. He hated to see them go. Albert Thompson bought them down to East Sebago. Milan and Norma came early this morning, brought Betty up to Portland, her mother very sick. Betty took another spill from Blondie. Blondie got frightened and run away and broke saddle.



Monday, October 3, 1955

Very nice day. I washed, got up early and got Milan and Norma off. I churned. Mama off to a beauty ride with Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis. Over to Os Abbott’s, he came home with them. Got a letter from Esther, she has been in the hospital sick with bronchial pneumonia. Got another letter from Dorothea.



Tuesday, October 4, 1955

Fair. Did up the housework and ironed. Charles and Evie Virgin called in p.m. Dolores called after supper. Jill, Betty and Terri had a picnic lunch down in the woods. Bill got a saddle down to Howard’s for Betty.



Wednesday, October 5, 1955

Very nice day. Quite warm. Kids came home at noon today. Teachers convention. I cooked in morning. Os Abbott over to Aunt Ava’s. Milan came this p.m. Terri, Jill and Holly here in p.m.
