The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 26 - June 1, 1945



Saturday, May 26, 1945

Bill, children and I went to town in a.m. and p.m. They finished up the scoot and went down to start hauling pulpwood. Grover bought Billie’s calf.



Sunday, May 27, 1945

Bill and Lloyd worked on the brooder house. Cold today. Charlie and Jean called. Mama came home from Ferns.


 
Monday, May 28, 1945

Cloudy and cold with thunderstorms tonight. Bill hauled out some pulpwood. Bill, Billie, and Val went over to Woods Pond fishing.



Tuesday, May 29, 1945

Bill and Billie hauled pulpwood. I got Dorothea and Betty’s new shoes.



Wednesday, May 30, 1945

Rained in a.m. Cold and windy but fair in p.m. We went down to the cemetery. Bill and Ed Robbins wired the barn. Lloyd worked up here.



Thursday, May 31, 1945

Cold and windy. Bill worked over to Raymond’s helping to plow. They hauled the little wood in p.m. I was over to Aunt Linnie’s in eve.



Friday, June 1, 1945

Terrible wind blow and cold. Dorothea came home from Ferns. Bill bought 4 new brooders from Wales Hamlin. They will come tomorrow.
