The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 24 -30, 1945



Saturday, March 24, 1945

We washed and churned. Very nice day. Judy had her calf 6 months it was dead. Billie didn’t go to movies.



Sunday, March 25, 1945

Family all called. Dorothea came home with Fern and Lloyd. Bill Dorothea and I went to movies. Very nice day. Bill and Billie raked the yard.



Monday, March 26, 1945

Mama went down to Aunt Mina’s. Kind of cloudy. We wash this morning. Hung clothes out back for first time.



Tuesday, March 27, 1945

I got my work done early today. Churned. Bill Betty and I went to town all this a.m. Nice day.



Wednesday, March 28, 1945

I washed and washed dining room curtains this forenoon. Very nice day. Wyvern got word to go into service Friday. A terrible blow for his folks and all.



Thursday, March 29, 1945

Wyvern got a chance to graduate by calling the draft board. Letters from Milan and the shoes he sent came. Very HOT 85 to 90°.



Friday, March 30, 1945

Bill, Betty and I went to town. Not so warm. I churned.
