The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 28 - May 4, 1945 Hitler Died



Saturday, April 28, 1945

Cold black clouds windy showers. Mom and I clean the cupboards in the kitchen. It was fair weather in p.m. Bill and Billie fenced. Billie went to movies.



Sunday, April 29, 1945

I dry mop dusted the house. Up to Minnie’s in p.m. She is a sick woman. Bill and Billie went over to Ken Lords in Denmark. Fern, Lloyd, Kennard, Dolores and Bob called.



Monday, April 30, 1945

Rained by showers. Mama, Bill, Betty, Nancy Smart and I went up to Waterford and up thru Sodurm (?) looking for tractors. Went to town in late p.m. with Ilan. Bill and I called up to Papa’s house.



Tuesday, May 1, 1945

We washed. Bill and I went down and bought a Fordson tractor of Jake Littlefield. Hitler died.



Wednesday, May 2, 1945

Bill and I went to Sandy Creek to pay Jake Littlefield for tractor $100. Bill, Mama, Betty and I went to Denmark. Announced by Pres. Truman Hitler died officially. Berlin taken by Russians. We got two German guns from Milan. Robert got a German uniform from Milan.



Thursday, May 3, 1945

Pretty good day, kind of showery. The Graham boys brought the tractor up from the creek. Ilan and Bill got it to running. I called at Minnie’s.



Friday, May 4, 1945

 Rained terribly hard all day and night. Didn’t do much. Bill called on Forrest.
