The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 30 - October 6, 1944



Saturday, September 30, 1944

Finished dining room. Went to town. Billie and Dorothea went to Waterford Fair with Bob’s folks. Papa not much better broke (?). Churned today and ironed.


Sunday, October 1, 1944

Bill home. Cleaned up the barn. Dorothea up to Camp Carlvern with the Smiths for dinner.

 
Monday, October 2, 1944

Bill stayed home today also Billie was home sick. He worked on the well. Awful cold. Cows over to Raymonds. Milan’s records came.

Tuesday, October 3, 1944

Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis brought Mama home from Uncle Willis. Bill, Ilan, and Milton Allen and Brud worked on the well. Still cold



Wednesday, October 4, 1944

I finished cleaning ceiling in kitchen. Bill began to stone the well today. Esther came tonight.



Thursday, October 5, 1944

I finished cleaning kitchen. Bill worked some more on the well. Dorothea stayed down to Ferns with Esther tonight.



Friday, October 6, 1944

Rained. Gave the house a general cleaning. Ironed till 11:30 PM and took a bath. Bill back to work.
