The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 22 - 28, 1944



Saturday, July 22, 1944

Bill, Dorothea, Betty and I went to town. I baked Blanche’s beans. Billie and Val down to town in eve.


Sunday, July 23, 1944

Bill, kids, Joy and I went up to Stoneham (West) fishing Bill and Billie got 29. Bill and I went up to Ilan and Minnie’s in eve.


Monday, July 24, 1944

Mama came home tonight from Ferns. I washed. Bill helped Ilan to plow his yard. Sent Jackie a birthday card.


Tuesday, July 25, 1944

Mama and I picked over and canned up 11 pints of blueberries that Kennard picked on top of Mount Pleasant. Bill, Billie, Rayburn and I picked a half bushel string beans. Mama and I canned them today.


Wednesday, July 26, 1944

Jackie’s birthday. And Judy had her calf a black heifer. Ronald up here all day. The calf was born at 5 o’clock.


Thursday, July 27, 1944

Rained today. We went up to Minnie’s tonight.


Friday, July 28, 1944

Rain mist all day. Fire downtown about 12 midnight. Dorothy Allen down in evening. Billie got his haircut over to Harrison.
