The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 18 - 24, 1944 Thanksgiving Day



Saturday, November 18, 1944

Bill, Dorothea and I went to town.I had to go on business. I got another new pair of shoes. Bought two pigs of  Velma Staley’s. 5.00 for the pair.



Sunday, November 19, 1944

 Lloyd and Fern up. Lloyd hung storm windows. Fitted and hung the two combination doors. Did a good job too. Kennard and Dolores up and Kennie and family. I have a new winter coat Fern got it at Ohio.

Nanny all gussied up - not necessarily the new coat Fern got her.



Monday, November 20, 1944

Washed. We moved the oil stove in from the shed and cleaned it. Also Mama cleaned the cook stove. Bill went to town and got grain. Billie not well and didn’t go to school.



Tuesday, November 21, 1944

Churned, washed did other regular work.



Wednesday, November 22, 1944

Snowing. A wet snow. We cooked prepared veg and chicken for Thanksgiving tomorrow. We washed.



Thursday, November 23, 1944 Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving chickens, mashed potatoes, sweet potato, turnip, squash, peas, boiled onions, cranberry sauce, fruit salad, pickles, hot rolls, gravy, pumpkin, custard common lemon sponge, apple pies, whipped cream cake, cream puffs, and Indian pudding. Lloyd came up and finished putting storm windows on. Bill worked, Bob and Ronald called and Kennard called in p.m. Also Fern and Lloyd in eve. (snowing)



Friday, November 24, 1944

Kids home today. Didn’t do much. Got a letter from Carlton.
