The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 20 - 26, 1945



Saturday, January 20, 1945

Nice day. Warm. Papa still here sick. Betty sick today. Bill helped me to do a lot of my work.



Sunday, January 21, 1945

Papa still very sick. Eye swollen more. Kinnie took him down here to the Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital. He stayed over nite.



Monday, January 22, 1945

Blanche, Brud, and I took Papa to the Eye and Ear Infirmary at Portland this p.m. Very bad eye infection. He was very weak and sick. Nice day. Mama came home.



Tuesday, January 23, 1945

We get a telephone call from Portland. Papa as well as can be expected. We did a big washday. Bill still home sick.



Wednesday, January 24, 1945

We cooked, cleaned up the house, wash floors. Began to get cold.



Thursday, January 25, 1945

Very cold and windy. No word from Papa. Billie back to school. We churned.



Friday, January 26, 1945

Awful cold. Not much doing around home, except on the work, washed. Dorothea wrote to Esther. Papa’s eye looks better. Kennard called on him today.
