The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 17 - 22, 1955



Sunday, April 17, 1955

A very cold day. Cloudy and east wind. I wrote to Esther, Dorothea, Susan and Milan’s folks. Bill and I over to Norway after supper.



Monday, April 18, 1955

Very nice warm day. I washed out on the porch again. I did some extra washing today. Donnie out most all day. I ironed in the evening. Billie up to Chet’s today. Kail came up this morning. Joy on TV again tonight.



Tuesday, April 19, 1955

Cloudy and rained today. I begun upstairs to clean house. Kail went home tonight. Bill, Billie and Betty down to Lawrence’s tonight to see some white headed calves.



Wednesday, April 20, 1955

Nice day today. I did some more cleaning upstairs. Bill, Betty, Kennard, Delores and I went down to Portland to see Mama at Eye and Ear Hospital. She was better.



Thursday, April 21, 1955

Cloudy. Daisy had too little lambs this morning. One not very good. Betty busy all day taking care of the lamb. Fern, Lloyd and Uncle Os up this a.m.



Friday, April 22, 1955

Cloudy again today. I cleaned draws and closets. Billie had five white headed calves come today he bought of Lawrence.
