Friday, May 5, 1961
Cold. A nice day. Sunny but cold. Mama and I cleaned the bureau
draws in her room. In evening Bill and I to town. Betty and Linda down to
Dawn’s for spaghetti supper. Irene went with them and Kathy too. Billie had to
work tonight. Today Col. Alan Shepard Jr. of Derry New Hampshire was rocketed
into space. First man in US. It was successful. We watched it on TV. Very
interesting.
Saturday, May 6, 1961 Letter from Adair’s, Ava Etta Keen’s
Birthday
A nice day. I cooked, in p.m. Blanche and I over to Norway.
In evening up to Aunt Ava’s. Bill and Betty plowed. Billie worked on stakes for
fence. Betty to town in evening. Billie up to Rangeley tonight smelting.
Sunday, May 7, 1961
A mean rainy day. Mike and kids called. Linda here. Fern,
Lloyd, Kennie, Dot, Ava, Linnie here. Bill and I cleaned smelts. Began tearing
chimney down over to Raymonds.
Monday, May 8, 1961
Another mean day. Cleared off about 3 o’clock in p.m. for
about three hours. Clothes got dried. Betty up to Irene’s after supper. Bill
and I down to Ferns in evening. Billie up to Chet’s. Alan Shepard Junior was
in Washington today being greeted by president and government officials. He was
the first man to fly into space in the US.
