The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 18-24, 1944



Saturday, March 18, 1944

A letter from Jack. We finished another puzzle. Made some fudge. I called Jean. Jack has been gone one year today. Was inducted March 11, left 18th in 1943.

Sunday, March 19, 1944

Bill home all day. Kennie and family up also Bob and family in p.m. Cold today.


Monday, March 20, 1944

Sent for electric brooder.  Snowed. Bille home from school sick. Marie Larson husband killed in shipyard at New York. Jean got two letters from Jack. Billie went to Allen’s (?).


Tuesday, March 21, 1944

I ironed. Papa sick all day. I made some brownies. Billie brought home good report card.


Wednesday, March 22, 1944

Billie 13 years old. We celebrated on Sunday. Nice and warm today. I called Jean to tell her we got a letter from Jack.


Thursday, March 23, 1944

First thing happened the Warren heifer had a bull calf and Billie stayed home from school. It snowed hard 3 inches then a heavy rain.


Friday, March 24, 1944

Bill Betty and I went to town both kids back to school. Papa gone all day Wednesday night.
