The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Bill and Billie went to town. I cleaned up the house. Billie went up to Smarts.


Sunday, February 20, 1944

Bill home, Bill went down town and got Dorothea. She was visiting at Ferns. Bob's family up in evening. Fricks called got 15 doz eggs. Check $4.33


Monday, February 21, 1944

Went over to Norway Hospital with Dorothea, Bill and I. At 9:30 her tonsils were out and she was out of either.(?) Not very sick, we shopped over there. Warm Day. Dr. Chesley Nelson. Papa, Bill and Billie hauled wood in P.M. Bill didn't work.


Tuesday, February 22, 1944

Bill, Billie and I went over to Norway and got Dorothea. Warm day. Snowing tonite. Bill went to work. Billie up to Smart's tonight. It cost $30.00 for Dr. Nelson to operate on Dorothea. $7.00 for hospital.


Wednesday, February 23, 1944

Did regular work. We put a puzzle together. Nice day. Bill worked. Esther called in evening to ask how Dorothea was. She called from Aurora, Ohio.Voices sounded good.

Thursday, February 24, 1944

Nice warm day. Bill and I went to town shopping. Helen Smart was up in P.M. and Don Cobbs little girl that Helen was caring for. Working on Aunt Linnie's puzzle.


Friday, February 25, 1944

A little colder today. Cleaned up the house. Dorothea better. Papa lost upper false teeth. Still working on puzzle.
